What a wonderful day this is in America, with the U.S. Supreme Court upholding President Obama’s Health Care Law–one of the most important steps forward this nation has ever done.
Since the beginning, Republicans have fought tooth and nail against a plan to bring health care to Americans as a RIGHT, not just to those with money to pay the staggering bills. President Obama had the strength and courage and stamina to push it thru: No, the law as it stands isn’t anywhere near done or enough, but that isn’t because the President didn’t ask for everything; it’s because Congress wouldn’t give it to him, and so much was “compromised” away to get any Republican votes, which in the end, Democrats didn’t get anyway.
No, the health care law–can we now Proudly call it Obamacare, instead of using that term as a slur?–is because of a Democratic President and Democrats in Congress. And now the Supreme Court has said–much to the surprise of most everyone, especially Mitt Romley–that it is CONSTITUTIONAL!!! Oh, what a day to celebrate.
Republicans and their Insurance Company friends keep badmouthing this bill as something horrible and unAmerican. They’ve been feeding the public buckets full of gargage, claiming this bill does things it doesn’t and ignoring all the things Americans want that it does. That’s understandable, especially because insurance company fangs are so filed down by this law; especially because the Republican mindset is that ANYTHING that advances the bottom line must be the right way to go, forget how much it robs or destroys the American people.
But Democrats are also to blame for the wholesale misunderstanding about this bill. They ran away from it in the 2010 election, as though it was something to be ashamed of; they didn’t stand up and shout what a great thing they’d done; they didn’t spell out all its fine points and benefits for a public that is overburdened with health care costs. I hope they now have the gumption to get off their duffs and scream from the mountaintops–something they should have been doing all along.
And President Obama hasn’t been the best salesman for his plan, either. Which I don’t really understand. So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, start talking plainly and fully to the American people to tell them EXACTLY what this bill does and how it benefits them and where the weaknesses are that need to be fixed by a Congress and President committed to health care reform.
Here’s one thing that has always guided my thinking about health care reform in America: Our economy can NEVER be fixed unless we get health care costs under control and stop the insurance companies from looting America.
So to use the best new word of the day: OBAMACARE is the start to making that happen. And a great big THANK YOU to the Supremes!!
