The devastating tape of Mitt Romney talking to supporters–saying 47 percent of Americans are freeloaders who depend on government and don’t believe in taking care of themselves and will vote for President Obama “no matter what”–is a very clear message to all Americans: This man has such disdain for most Americans, he is not fit to be president.
First, let’s remember that Mitt Romney himself refuses to release anything but one year of his own income tax returns–and that return shows he paid about 13 percent on his income, which is a much smaller percentage than is paid by middle-class people whose taxes are based entirely on their wages. (America’s tax law favors those who earn their money by capital, rather than by labor, which I think is wrong to start with.) Romney refuses to release any other returns, and there’s considerable speculation on why–the most common is that in some years in the last decade, while he was making millions of dollars every year, he so shielded his income, he was paying almost no tax, or in a worst-case scenario, paid no income taxes at all.
But you can bet Mitt Romney wasn’t talking about himself, or other millionaires who pay no taxes because they shield their incomes–those guys are clever; not freeloaders. Those guys are smart, not the bottom-feeders who support President Obama.
Second, his portrayal of 47 percent paying no income taxes means he’s talking primarily about either Senior Citizens who are retired or those so poor they make less than $20,000 a year for a family of four. So he thinks Senior Citizens, who worked all their lives and now are living on social security and their retirement funds, are freeloaders? Boy, that’s going to go over well. And he thinks people so poor they can’t feed their children are freeloaders because their income is too small to pay income taxes.
I predict Americans will share my outrage at such an elitest, snobbish, unfair and ridiculous view of our people.
This poor excuse for the presidential candidate is digging his grave every single day. No matter all the smart Republicans refused to join his ticket and are giving but tepid support. No wonder Americans have seen through this man and agree he is not fit to be president.
So, Mitt Romney thinks that I and the rest of the 46% of voters who voted for Obama think we’re ‘victims’ and are dependent on the government. I usually let what politicians say kind of run off my back, but this one stuck. I’ve been luckier than most – got a scholarship, grant and loan for college because I was lucky enough to be a smart, poor high schooler in the ’60s. I had a wonderful career. I saved in addition to contributing to my Social Security so I could retire. I’ve enjoyed good health and – so far – no crippling financial emergencies. Who is this jerk to say I and nearly half the population are free-loaders who are not worth his attention because we know Obama is a better choice for president?
