So Republicans, who trashed the economy so bad we were on the brink of another Great Depression, want to know if Americans are better off today then when President Obama took office?
There’s only one honest answer to that question: Of course, they are.
When Obama took office, America had been steadily losing jobs for more than a year under George W Bush–as many as 800,000 A MONTH were disappearing. Since Obama took office, he’s had 30 straight months of jobs growth, adding some 4.6 million jobs over his first term so far.
If that enough? Of course not. It’s far short of what is needed.
But the idea that we are not better off now than when we were LOSING 800,000 jobs a month–that’s just lunacy.
Bill Clinton–the ONLY president in my entire lifetime who actually had surplus budgets and left the country with money in the bank when George Bush became President–eloquently and unconditionally said during the Democratic Convention that NO president–not him, not any of his predecessors–could have repaired ALL the damage of the Bush administration in just four years.
Of course, Republicans want to take the advances Obama has made and make that into a failure. They want to take America back to the policies in place BEFORE Obama became president: the exact same policies that took us to the brink of a total depression in the first place.
As Clinton said, he doesn’t want to put the reins of government in the hands of anyone who would “double down on trickle down.” I totally agree.
So the next time the question is asked, is America better off than it was four years ago, I hope you’ll join me in saying with incredulity at the idiocy of the question: Well, of course it is.
